Health Benefits of Indoor Tanning

Wolff tanning beds provide tanners with an indoor tanning opportunity to maintain the golden glow of a cosmetic tan year-round. While some dermatologists recommend avoiding exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) from both indoor and outdoor sources, many more recognize the benefits of moderate UV exposure while advocating the use of sunscreens.

According to the World Health Organization, some exposure to UV light is essential to the body in order for it to produce vitamin D, which aids in the building of strong bones, teeth, and blood cell formation. Also according to the World Health Organization, medically supervised phototherapy (exposure to UV light such as that emitted by Wolff tanning lamps) has been used successfully to treat various conditions, including psoriasis.

There is also a growing body of evidence that exposure to bright light sources has been successful in treating the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Regardless of any health benefit derived from UV light exposure—indoor or outdoor—it is important that tanners practice common sense safe tanning techniques to prevent the potentially damaging effects of indoor and outdoor UV light exposure.
